As our eyes develop, sometimes they begin to take an elongated shape, resulting in light entering your eye too soon. When this happens, it causes your retina to not focus on images in the distance.

Myopia, or nearsightedness, can continue to progress as the eye develops. Someone with myopia may require progressively stronger prescription lenses to correct their vision over time.

The sooner we start myopia control, the more your child’s eyes can benefit from it. We will check for early signs and symptoms of myopia at their comprehensive eye exams, which is another reason why following a regular eye exam schedule is important for their visual development.

Your optometrist may suggest myopia control if your child is at a higher risk for myopia due to family history or if they are already developing myopia.

There are several ways we can control the progression of myopia in young children.

One of the ways is using MiSight contact lenses. These are designed to correct the refractive error that myopia causes and slow the elongation of the eye as it develops.

MiSight contact lenses are ideal for children between 8 and 12. They use 2 treatment zones, creating myopic defocus by focusing the image your child sees in front of the retina rather than behind it to help slow elongation.

Why Control Myopia?

If myopia is left untreated, your child may require frequent prescription updates to help them see as their eyes develop. Eventually, they could develop high myopia, which puts them at higher risk for developing cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration later in life.

The staff at Pinnacle are great and the office was extremely comfortable! The environment was welcoming and I actually forgot that this was the first time we ever met! Wow! What an amazing office. I have been looking for an eye doctor in Columbus since I moved. Dr. King-Smith is so friendly and inviting!
