How Does Laser Eye Surgery Work?

There are 2 types of laser eye surgery: LASIK and PRK. Both of these types reshape your cornea so that light can enter your eye correctly.

The main difference between LASIK and PRK is this: LASIK involves cutting a flap in your cornea and closing it after, and PRK involves removing the outer layer of your cornea. In both cases, a laser is used to reshape your cornea, and your body heals on its own.

The healing time for LASIK is typically quicker, but there are more risks involved with the incision.

Our Consultation Process

During your laser eye surgery consultation, we will review your lifestyle and assess which procedure is best for you. We will also go over any risks and determine whether or not you are a suitable candidate for the procedure.

We’re here to help you determine if you are a candidate for laser eye surgery and assess the best method for you.

For instance, people who lead highly active lifestyles could damage their eyes following a LASIK procedure. But, healing time with LASIK is quicker and less invasive as you won’t need to wear an eye patch as long as with PRK.

Any type of surgery comes with associated risks. Laser eye surgery is a routine procedure performed by surgeons, and it is fairly safe. However, both LASIK and PRK have possible complications.

Some risks include:

  • Dry eye—especially prevalent with LASIK; you can temporarily or permanently produce fewer tears
  • Light sensitivity—includes halos around lights, poor night vision, and double vision (often, this goes away)
  • Undercorrection—laser eye surgery doesn’t always repair vision 100%
  • Ectasia—this occurs when too much of your cornea is removed, causing it to bulge (it must be repaired to prevent vision loss)
  • Infections—more common with LASIK flap complications
